How to Analyze and Clarify User Journeys in Microsoft Clarity
Step 1: Install Microsoft Clarity
If you haven’t already:
- Go to https://clarity.microsoft.com
- Sign up and add your website
- Install the tracking code manually or through a tag manager like Google Tag Manager
Step 2: Use Session Recordings to Understand Behavior
- Open the “Recordings” section
- Filter by behaviors like:
- Pages visited
- Time on site
- Rage clicks
- Exit pages
- Watch how users move through the site:
- Where they enter and exit
- Which actions they take (or don’t take)
- Where they pause or show signs of confusion
Step 3: Use Heatmaps to Identify Friction
- Go to the “Heatmaps” tab
- Select key pages like home, product, or form pages
- Review:
- Click maps: where users are clicking
- Scroll maps: how far down users are scrolling
This will help identify areas that attract attention—or where users lose interest.
Step 4: Segment Journeys with Filters
Use filters to isolate specific behaviors or paths, for example:
- Entry page = /home
- Visited page = /checkout
- Exit page = /cart
This allows you to track and clarify how different groups of users behave.
Step 5: Tag or Favorite Key Sessions
As you review recordings:
- Use the “Tag” feature to label behaviors (e.g., “abandoned checkout”)
- Use “Favorites” to bookmark sessions worth sharing
This helps build a focused set of real user journeys for further analysis.
Step 6: Export Learnings to Visual Tools
Clarity doesn’t generate flowcharts, but you can:
- Take notes or screenshots of sessions
- Build visual journey maps in tools like Figma, Miro, or Lucidchart using that data
Additional Tips
- Integrate with Google Analytics for deeper segmentation and goal tracking
- Watch for patterns like rage clicks, fast page exits, and repeat backtracking
- Use JavaScript to add custom tags for key user actions (e.g., form submission, video plays)
